If Jesus Was Born Today
by Troy Schmidt
If Jesus was born today
Mary and Joseph would not travel on a donkey,
but in an old, beat-up car.
It would still be a long trip with Mary
wondering, "Are we there yet?"
If Jesus was born today, the cities would
be much bigger with lots more people.
It would be easy for Mary and Joseph to
get lost.
If Jesus was born today, the motel would
be full because everyone was on vacation
And the only place to sleep would be a
cold, stinky parking garage.
If Jesus was born today, Mary would go
to a hospital filled with doctors and nurses, carrying stethoscopes,
X-rays and big scary needles.
And a huge medical bill.
If Jesus was born today, he would still
enter the world a poor, tiny baby, cold and shivering
But they could use an electric blanket
instead of rags to keep him warm.
If Jesus was born today, animals like sheep,
cows and donkeys would not be found in a city.
Maybe some dogs, a raccoon and a couple
stray cats would welcome the newborn king.
If Jesus was born today, angels would announce
his arrival, but people would have a hard time believing they
were real
And not some magician's trick or a special
effect from a movie.
If Jesus was born today, the angels could
not find shepherds downtown in a big city
But truck drivers and firemen could be
found around every corner.
The angel would say to them, "This
will be a sign for you; you will find a baby wrapped in an electric
blanket and lying in a parking garage of a motel."
And the truck drivers and firemen would
travel in their dump trucks and fire engines to the place the
angel told them to go
But they'd probably get stuck in all that
traffic.
If Jesus was born today, the wise men would
be called science teachers and use huge telescopes to see the
amazing star in the sky.
They would not ride camels to follow that
star, but fly in fancy flying machines or rocket packs strapped
to their backs.
If Jesus was born today, the science teachers
wouldn't bring gifts like toys to the baby Jesus because the lines
at the store were too long.
So they would bring gold rocks, air fresheners
and healthy medicines they made in their laboratories.
If Jesus was born today, the announcement
of his birth would be printed, along with all the other babies
born that day, on page nineteen of the newspaper.
Many would still miss it with all those
advertisements and headlines.
A lot would change if Jesus was born today,
except for one very important thing
It would still be the greatest moment that
ever happened, for all time.
The End
